Surrounding areas offer interesting side trips like coffee plantations, spectacular mountain driving, mini rainforests, the Rio Camuy Cave Park, Cabo Rojo’s salt flats, Areceibo Observatory’s massive radio telescope, and the biologically wondrous Phosphorescent Bay in LaParguera. Golfing is available 35 minutes north in Aguadilla and casino gambling is 20 minutes south in Mayagüez.
As for shopping convenience, within twenty minutes, you will find Western Plaza which features a Sam’s Club, K-Mart, Home Depot, and a modern movie theater with ten screens and stadium seating (the movies are in English with Spanish sub-titles). Ten more minutes down the four lane road is the Mayaguez Mall where you will find Sears, JC Penneys, Marshalls and WallMart, among others.
When coming to Rincón, you don’t need a passport, as Puerto Rico is a US Territory. The US dollar is used, and while Spanish is the first language of the island, you will hear English spoken a lot here. Puerto Rico is on Atlantic Standard Time (AST), which means we are one hour ahead of Eastern Standard Time in the winter and in sync with the east coast when the US goes on Daylight Savings Time.
Getting here has been made easier with flights into Aguadilla (30 minutes away) on United, Jet Blue, and Spirit Airlines from certain east coast cities in the US. Flights into San Juan are plentiful and you can connect to a Cape Air flight into Mayagüez (20 minutes away), or you can drive from San Juan in 2-3 hours on mostly expressway and four lane roads.
Although buying property here is relatively easy compared to other locations in the Caribbean, there can be problems with titles and inheritance laws that can affect your purchase. It is highly recommended that you find a reputable, experienced real estate broker to guide you through this process. When you are ready to take the plunge (…and we highly recommend it!), come on down, and the friendly professionals at Island West Properties will be glad to show you around our little corner of paradise.
